Asia Cup 2025: Jitesh Sharma’s Honest Words to Dinesh Karthik

Jitesh Sharma Returns for Asia Cup 2025

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) vice-captain Jitesh Sharma has earned a recall to the Indian T20I side for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, joining Sanju Samson as one of the wicketkeepers in the squad.

The 31-year-old forced his way back into the national setup after a strong IPL 2025 campaign, where he scored 261 runs at an average of 37.29 and a strike rate of 176.35, embracing the finisher’s role for RCB. His quick-fire cameo of 24 runs from 10 balls in the final against Punjab Kings was one of several match-defining knocks this season.

Jitesh’s Mindset: Pressure-Free Approach

Sharma, who first debuted for India in T20Is at the 2023 Asian Games, had played nine matches before being dropped in 2024. Reflecting on his journey, RCB batting coach and mentor Dinesh Karthik revealed how Jitesh deliberately chose not to burden himself with the weight of expectations.

“This was part of his questioning to me: ‘I want to do well. Obviously, I want to try and represent India. But I don’t want to get too caught up and put so much pressure on myself that I’m not enjoying playing wherever I am,’” Karthik told Cricbuzz.

Karthik added that this honest approach marked the start of their coach-player journey and helped Jitesh rediscover his rhythm.

IPL Journey and Growth

Jitesh first made his IPL debut in 2022 with Punjab Kings, scoring 234 runs at a strike rate of 163.64. His consistent cameos earned him recognition, followed by 309 runs in 2023. However, a dip in form in the 2024 season—187 runs at an average of 17—saw him lose his spot in India’s T20 World Cup squad.

Despite the setback, RCB invested heavily in him, buying him for ₹11 crore in the mega auction and naming him vice-captain. Jitesh rewarded that faith with one of his best IPL seasons, including a memorable 85 off 33 balls against Lucknow Super Giants*, cementing his reputation as a reliable finisher.

Lessons from Karthik

Karthik revealed that Jitesh wanted to refine his finishing ability and learn how to convert cameos into match-winning innings.

“What he wanted to work on was: how do I finish a game? How do I get the team to above par? He was playing a lot of cameos, never knowing how to play that big innings required to win a game,” Karthik said.

He added that while many compare their playing styles, Jitesh’s strength lies in his vertical swing and powerful down-the-ground hitting, unlike Karthik’s more innovative shot-making.

Looking Ahead

With the Asia Cup approaching, Jitesh Sharma enters the tournament with renewed confidence and maturity. His journey from IPL finisher to India recall is a testament to persistence, self-awareness, and the right mentorship at the right time.
