BCCI Shuts Criticism Over Playing Pakistan in Asia Cup 2025: ‘A Country Not on Friendly Terms With India…’

BCCI Defends India Playing Pakistan in Asia Cup 2025

India’s upcoming Asia Cup 2025 clash with Pakistan on September 14 in Dubai has stirred a storm. The anger follows the April 22 terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam that left 26 tourists dead. Former cricketers, fans, and sections of the public have called for a boycott of the match.

Saikia Defends BCCI’s Stand

Responding to the criticism, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia defended India’s participation. He explained that the board is simply following the central government’s official policy. According to him, the August 2025 revision allows Indian teams to compete in multinational events, even if they involve countries not on friendly terms with India. However, bilateral cricket ties with such nations remain prohibited.

“So far as the BCCI’s view is concerned, we have to follow whatever the central government formalises,” Saikia told ANI. He clarified that ICC and continental tournaments like the Asia Cup require mandatory participation.

Why Boycotting Isn’t an Option

Saikia stressed that boycotting could bring serious consequences, including sanctions from international bodies. Such sanctions, he warned, wouldn’t just affect cricket but could impact other sports as well.

He gave the example of Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra, noting that if India refused to compete against athletes from hostile nations, it could jeopardize the country’s participation in global athletics. “That will be detrimental to the interests of the players,” he said.

The Policy Explained

The government’s policy draws a clear line:

  • Multinational tournaments: India will participate, even if it involves teams from unfriendly nations.
  • Bilateral matches: No engagement with hostile countries.

Saikia called the policy “balanced and practical,” saying it protects India’s strategic stance while keeping athletes part of the international competitive system. “We are very happy to follow the policy. It has been designed thoughtfully, considering not just cricket but every sport,” he added.
