In just his debut series as India’s Test captain, Shubman Gill is turning heads — and now, he’s drawing comparisons to the legendary Don Bradman. With 565 runs in just two Tests against England, including two centuries and a double ton, Gill has ignited hopes of smashing records long thought untouchable — especially Bradman’s monumental 974-run haul in a single series, set in 1930.
But can he actually do it? Former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar isn’t so sure.
“He’s in terrific form, and I hope he does it — but I don’t know if he will,” Vengsarkar told PTI. “We get obsessed with personal milestones. What truly matters is winning games for India.”
Bradman’s Record in Sight, but Gavaskar’s Next in Line
Shubman Gill’s sensational knocks of 269 and 161 at Edgbaston have already secured him the record for the most runs by an Indian in the first two Tests of a series and the highest individual Test score by an Indian captain. Now, he stands within reach of two legendary milestones: Sunil Gavaskar’s 774-run mark, the most by an Indian in a single series, and Don Bradman’s all-time record of 974 runs. With three matches remaining, Gill needs 209 to overtake Gavaskar and 390 to eclipse Bradman — a steep climb, but not beyond reach given his red-hot form.
Vengsarkar: “It’s About Impact, Not Just Numbers”
The man who knows a thing or two about pressure at Lord’s, Vengsarkar praised Gill’s leadership and composure, but urged perspective.
“He’s doing brilliantly as captain and batsman. Leading from the front matters more than chasing numbers. The real impact comes from match-winning performances.”
Gavaskar Backs Gill to Break His Record
While Vengsarkar remains cautious, Sunil Gavaskar believes Gill is capable — and predicts Lord’s will be the ground where history is rewritten.
“I think it’ll happen at Lord’s,” Gavaskar told Sports Today. “Gill has the technique, temperament, and timing. He’s got all the shots and the mindset to play for the team. Records are meant to be broken — and I’d be thrilled if another SG beats mine.”
Will Gill Rewrite History?
Three Tests remain. Form is on his side. Confidence is building. And the world is watching.
Whether or not Shubman Gill breaks Bradman’s or Gavaskar’s records, one thing’s for sure — he’s carving his own legacy with every stroke of the bat.
