Massive Blow for India: Rishabh Pant Likely to Miss West Indies Test Series

Rishabh Pant to Miss West Indies Test Series

Team India has been dealt a major setback ahead of their home Test series against the West Indies. Star wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant is set to miss the two-match series beginning October 2 in Ahmedabad, according to a report by ESPNcricinfo.

Pant, who was vice-captain during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in England earlier this year, fractured his left foot on the opening day of the fourth Test in Manchester. Tamil Nadu’s N Jagadeesan replaced him for the final Test at the Oval.

Injury Update and Recovery Timeline

Pant is currently undergoing strength and conditioning sessions while awaiting further clearance from the BCCI medical team. Though he has resumed some training, there is still no confirmed timeline for his return to competitive cricket.

With the Australia white-ball series beginning October 19, Pant’s availability for that tour also remains uncertain.

Dhruv Jurel Likely to Step In

In Pant’s absence, Dhruv Jurel is expected to take the gloves for the series against the West Indies. Jurel has already featured in India’s last two Tests against England and is currently part of the India A squad facing Australia A in Lucknow.

Jagadeesan could once again serve as the backup wicketkeeper if the selectors decide to carry two specialists.

Selection Meeting and Possible Inclusions

The Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel will meet on September 24 to finalise a 15-member squad, two fewer than the one picked for India’s 3-0 series loss to New Zealand in October 2024.

According to reports, Karnataka opener Devdutt Padikkal and Andhra all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy are being considered for selection. Padikkal impressed with a 150 for India A against Australia A, while Reddy, who has seven Test caps, is making his way back from a knee injury.

India’s WTC Push

India currently sits third in the World Test Championship standings and will be eyeing maximum points from the West Indies series to climb further in the 2025–27 cycle table.
