Pathan Reveals How Gill-Abhishek Duo’s Killer Instinct Is Fueling India’s Dominance

Pathan Hails Gill-Abhishek Duo’s Killer Instinct

Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has hailed the impressive partnership between Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma, praising how their long-standing friendship and understanding are now paying dividends on the big stage. The duo, who have played together since their early days in Punjab cricket, have been exceptional at the top of the order in the Asia Cup 2025, delivering consecutive 70-plus opening stands against Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Gill, who returned to the T20I setup as vice-captain after a brief absence due to India’s packed schedule, has been playing the supporting role perfectly. His ability to anchor the innings while letting the in-form Abhishek attack from the other end has helped India dominate the powerplay.

Pathan Praises Communication and Chemistry

Speaking on Sony Sports, Pathan highlighted how the pair’s communication on the field is one of the keys to their success. “Abhishek and Shubman, their combination that has gotten set is praiseworthy because you need a batter who complements you at the other end. You often hear them talking, planning singles after boundaries, and building partnerships with smart cricket,” he said.

The ’15 Runs’ Moment That Shows Killer Instinct

Pathan also shared an amusing yet telling incident from India’s clash against Bangladesh. During the fourth over, Shubman reminded Abhishek after the fifth ball that 15 runs had already been scored, hinting that he should play the final delivery cautiously. But Abhishek had other ideas — he launched Nasum Ahmed for a six instead.

“It’s a different thing that they don’t listen,” Pathan laughed. “Shubman told Abhishek that 15 runs had come in the over and asked him to be careful with the last ball. He said yes, but then smashed it for a six. That’s the kind of killer instinct and confidence this pair has.”

Abhishek Tops Run Charts

Abhishek’s fearless batting has been a standout in the tournament — he currently leads the run-scoring charts with 248 runs in five matches at a blistering strike rate of 206.67. Gill, though not scoring as heavily, has chipped in with 111 runs across five games, playing the perfect foil to his aggressive partner.

The Gill-Abhishek opening pair has quickly become one of India’s biggest strengths, combining trust, aggression, and tactical awareness — a partnership Pathan believes could be vital in India’s pursuit of the Asia Cup title.
