The opening ceremony of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati, Assam, is set to be an emotional and unforgettable affair. To honor the legacy of Assam’s beloved musical icon Zubeen Garg, who tragically passed away on September 19 in Singapore, the event will include a 40-minute musical tribute celebrating his life, art, and deep connection to sports.
A Heartfelt Homage to a Cultural Legend
The Assam Cricket Association (ACA) has announced that renowned artists, including Angarag Papon Mahanta, Joi Barua, and the Shillong Chamber Choir, will perform during the tribute segment of the opening ceremony. The performance aims to celebrate Garg’s immense contribution to Assamese music and culture and pay homage to a personality who was deeply loved across generations.
To make the occasion even more special, 5,000 free tickets will be distributed to Garg’s fans for the tournament’s opening match between India and Sri Lanka. The tickets will be available through the Guwahati Sports Association (GSA) office at Nehru Stadium, starting Monday, 10 AM.
“This initiative is about celebrating unity through sport and culture and encouraging public participation in a global sporting event,” an ACA official said.
Remembering Zubeen Garg
Aged 52, Zubeen Garg was more than just a celebrated singer and composer — he was a symbol of Assamese pride and a passionate sports enthusiast. Known for his love of football and cricket, he often participated in charity matches and community sports events.
Following his untimely passing, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that the board and ACA would include a tribute in his memory during the World Cup inauguration.
“As someone who inspired millions and brought joy to countless lives, Zubeen Garg deserves this gesture of respect and remembrance,” Saikia said.
