West Indies skipper Roston Chase has issued a bold warning to India ahead of their two-Test series, calling his side “dangerous underdogs” who have nothing to lose.
Underdogs With a Point to Prove
Currently sixth in the World Test Championship table and without a win from three matches, the West Indies enter the series with history against them. They haven’t beaten India in a Test in 23 years, and their last series win in India came way back in 1983-84. Still, Chase believes that freedom from pressure could play in their favor.
“We are coming in as the underdogs. We have nothing to lose, and that makes us quite a dangerous side,” Chase said.
Learning From New Zealand’s Success
Chase revealed that the team has closely studied New Zealand’s famous 3-0 whitewash of India last year, with analysts sending detailed footage.
“Obviously, our Test record isn’t great right now, but we’ve been learning from New Zealand’s approach. They came here and dominated, so we’ve tried to focus on those critical points and put in the work. Playing in India means spin will play a big role, and we’ve been preparing for that,” he explained.
Injury Setbacks But Determined Approach
The West Indies’ plans have already been hit by the absence of fast bowlers Shamar Joseph and Alzarri Joseph due to injury. Despite that, coach Darren Sammy has promised to challenge India with pace variety, while Chase emphasized the importance of spinners in Indian conditions.
Ahmedabad Pitch Watch
Adding another twist, the Ahmedabad surface — venue for the first Test — had a greenish tinge when Chase inspected it. “India is mainly a spin-based country, but the pitch does look a bit green. We’ll see what it looks like at the start,” he noted.
