India’s fast-bowling spearhead Jasprit Bumrah continues to be at the centre of debate — whether it’s about his selection, rest, or workload management. But teammate Mohammed Siraj has now spoken out in strong defence of the ace pacer, reminding critics of the seriousness of Bumrah’s past injury and the risks involved if he pushes himself too far.
Bumrah’s Injury Is “Very Sensitive,” Says Siraj
Siraj revealed that Bumrah’s decision to sit out certain matches — including the crucial Oval Test in England — was not a matter of choice but of necessity. The star pacer underwent a major back surgery not long ago, and returning too quickly could have ended his career.
“Bumrah bhai doesn’t care about outside opinions,” Siraj told The Indian Express. “He had a serious back injury and a big surgery. If he had bowled in that match, we don’t know if he’d ever bowl again if something went wrong.”
Siraj stressed that Bumrah’s bowling action puts immense strain on his back, making it even more important to manage his workload carefully.
Selection Debates and Strategic Rest
Bumrah’s selection choices have often split opinions. He featured in the home Test series against the West Indies — a series many felt was an ideal time to rest him — but was then rested for the ODI series against Australia. With a T20 World Cup at home next year, India’s focus has shifted toward keeping him fresh for marquee events.
A similar scenario unfolded during the England Test series, where Bumrah played three of the five matches, sitting out the second Test at Edgbaston and the series decider at The Oval. Ironically, India won both games he missed, fuelling further criticism.
India’s Bowling Remains Strong in Bumrah’s Absence
Despite the scrutiny, Siraj believes Bumrah’s long-term fitness is far more valuable than short-term appearances. “He’s such an important bowler for India — from the Asia Cup to the World Cup, his presence matters,” Siraj said.
And even when Bumrah was sidelined, India’s pace attack didn’t falter. Siraj stepped up impressively, delivering match-winning performances in both Edgbaston and The Oval, proving the team’s depth while their strike bowler focused on full recovery.
