‘Stop Trolling…’: Aakash Chopra Defends Harshit Rana Amid Selection Criticism

Aakash Chopra Defends Harshit Rana Amid Criticism

Harshit Rana has found himself in the middle of an online storm after being named in both India’s ODI and T20I squads for the upcoming white-ball series against Australia. The young pacer, who was also part of India’s victorious Asia Cup campaign, has faced sharp criticism from some fans and former cricketers — but former India opener Aakash Chopra has stepped up to defend him.

Chopra Urges Fans to Target the Right People

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra called on fans to stop blaming Rana for his frequent selections, pointing out that the decision lies with selectors, not the player.

“People are trolling this kid,” he said. “It’s not his fault that he gets picked in every squad. Selection is done by the selectors — the captain and coach can give inputs, but they don’t have voting rights. If someone keeps getting selected, that’s not on the player. You’re aiming your criticism at the wrong person.”

Rana’s Journey and Potential

Rana made his international debut during India’s Test tour of Australia last year. Since then, he has played two Tests, five ODIs, and three T20Is, collecting 19 wickets. Chopra believes that the pacer has shown glimpses of real promise.

“I feel he’s got the potential,” Chopra noted. “He can bat, and whenever he’s bowled, he’s looked capable.”

Alleged Delay in Debut and Future Outlook

Chopra also suggested that Rana’s international debut was intentionally delayed so that Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) could retain him as an uncapped player before an IPL auction.

“I still remember how his debut was postponed so KKR could retain him. He was part of several squads but only debuted after that,” he explained.

Chopra urged fans to give the youngster more time instead of tearing him down online. “Let’s stop trolling anyone who plays for India. He’s shown potential, performed as a concussion substitute, and bowled well in Perth against Australia. He deserves patience and support,” he concluded.
