‘Not a Holiday’: Gautam Gambhir Responds to BCCI’s Strict Policy on Family Travel, Frowned Upon by Kohli and Rohit

Gambhir Defends BCCI's Family Travel Policy

India’s 1-3 Test series loss to Australia didn’t just hurt the scoreboard—it triggered a wave of changes inside the team. Just as Gautam Gambhir wrapped up his final Test series as head coach, tensions spilled into the public eye.

BCCI Responds with Strict New Rules

After the defeat, the BCCI introduced a 10-point policy aimed at tightening discipline. The rules covered many areas: players had to travel with the team, limit personal baggage, and play domestic cricket to stay in contention. The response was so significant that even Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma—who hadn’t played domestic matches in years—turned up for Delhi and Mumbai.

Family Travel Restrictions Spark Controversy

The most controversial rule was the restriction on family travel. Players were told not to arrive at or leave team hotels with family. Family members were only allowed during long tours—those lasting more than 45 days—and even then, under strict limits.

In a private exchange with selector Ajit Agarkar, Rohit Sharma hinted at his frustration. “Now I have to sit for another hour or so with the secretary to talk about all this family stuff. Everyone’s bringing it up,” he said.

Gambhir Breaks His Silence

Ahead of the 3rd Test at Lord’s, Gambhir finally addressed the issue. Speaking with Cheteshwar Pujara on Sony Sports Network, he made it clear that the team’s goal must come first.

“Families are important, no doubt. But we’re not on holiday,” Gambhir said. “We’re here to serve a bigger purpose. Only a few get to wear that jersey and represent India.”

He continued, “I’m not against players having their families around. But if you’re truly focused on the mission, everything else takes a back seat. That purpose comes first.”

Kohli Also Shares His Disappointment

Kohli spoke about the issue during the IPL at the RCB Innovation Lab’s Indian Sports Summit. He highlighted how family support helps athletes deal with pressure.

“It’s hard to explain how grounding it is to return to your family after something intense,” he said. “It’s disappointing that people not involved in the process make decisions that affect that support. They push this idea that families need to stay away.”

Finding a Balance Moving Forward

While Gambhir defended the rules, Kohli and Rohit made their concerns clear. The debate now is about balance—how to keep players focused on national duty while still allowing space for personal support. The Indian team must navigate this delicate line if it wants both discipline and morale to stay strong.
