With Rishabh Pant ruled out due to a toe fracture, Dhruv Jurel is all set to don the gloves for India in the fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at The Oval. The 24-year-old wicketkeeper-batter will be playing his first Test in English conditions, stepping into big shoes in a must-win encounter.
From Backup to Center Stage
Jurel made his Test debut in Pant’s absence during the home series against England last year, featuring in three matches. He later appeared in the Perth Test against Australia, batting as a specialist.
His latest opportunity comes under similar circumstances—Pant’s premature exit from the England tour due to injury has opened the door once again. Although this will be his official Test debut in England, Jurel has already taken the field twice during the series, filling in for Pant during the third and fourth Tests due to on-field injuries.
A Dream Realized at Lord’s
Recounting his brief appearance at Lord’s, Jurel shared the emotional weight of the moment.
“It was unfortunate what happened to Rishabh bhaiya. But when I stepped out to keep wickets at Lord’s, it was a dream come true,” Jurel said in a BCCI video.
“I’ve dreamt of playing at Lord’s since I was a kid, so I just took it all in and enjoyed the moment.”
Learning from Pant, Preparing with Focus
Despite the competitive situation, there’s no shortage of guidance from Rishabh Pant.
“Rishabh bhaiya has shared some really useful tips with me—like where to take the stance, foot movement—and I’ve been working on that with Dilip sir,” Jurel explained.
The young wicketkeeper praised Pant’s mentorship and added that he’s focused on making every opportunity count.
Focused on the Team, Not Just the Stats
Jurel, who averages 40.40 with the bat in Tests, says he’s not chasing numbers but moments that help the team succeed.
“When you perform overseas, it carries more weight. I want to go out there and express myself,” he said.
“This match is very important for us. I just want to do that one thing—whatever it may be—that helps the team win.”
For Jurel, being a true team player means stepping up when needed, regardless of the spotlight. With the series on the line, he’ll now get his chance to make a lasting impact.
