India’s T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav remains in the final phase of his recovery before the Asia Cup 2025. The Mumbai Indians star had undergone sports hernia surgery in June in Munich, Germany. Following the operation, he reported to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru to speed up his rehabilitation. While there were initial hopes of him regaining full match readiness quickly, Times of India reports that the batter still needs more time to be at peak fitness.
The 33-year-old will extend his stay at the NCA for another week. He will work closely with physiotherapists and the medical staff to complete his recovery plan. The Asia Cup begins on September 9, with India opening their campaign against the UAE on September 10.
Suryakumar is expected to lead India once fit for the eight-nation event. Last week, he shared a video on Instagram showing him running, working out, and batting in the nets at the NCA. “Can’t wait to be back doing what I love,” he captioned the post.
The explosive right-hander last featured for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025, where he amassed 717 runs. He finished second on the run charts, behind Gujarat Titans’ Sai Sudharsan, who took home the Orange Cap.
Hardik Pandya Begins Fitness Tests
The Times of India report also confirmed that Hardik Pandya has checked into the NCA before the Asia Cup. The premier Indian all-rounder will take part in routine fitness evaluations on August 11 and 12. Hardik has been training in Mumbai since mid-July and is seen as a crucial part of India’s plans for both the Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup 2026 in India and Sri Lanka.
Shreyas Iyer’s Selection Remains Uncertain
Shreyas Iyer recently completed his fitness assessment at the NCA between July 27 and 29. Despite impressive domestic form for Mumbai, he was not included in the Test squad for the England series. Earlier this year, Shreyas captained Punjab Kings to the IPL final. However, his place in the Asia Cup T20I squad is still unclear. His last T20I appearance for India came in December 2023.
