David Warner’s 71 Not Enough as Manchester Originals Claim Maiden Win Over London Spirit in The Hundred 2025

Warner’s 71 in Vain as Originals Win

David Warner’s brilliant 51-ball 71 went in vain as Manchester Originals beat London Spirit by 10 runs in an exciting contest at Old Trafford on August 11. Despite Warner’s masterclass, the London Spirit fell short, giving Manchester their first victory of The Hundred 2025 season.

Electing to bat first, Manchester Originals got off to a flying start. Phil Salt smashed three boundaries in the first six balls, setting the tone early. Ben McKinney followed with a blazing 29 runs off just 12 balls. Their opening partnership laid the foundation for a strong total.

London Spirit Regain Control in Middle Overs

Once Salt departed midway, London Spirit fought back to regain control. Jos Buttler and Heinrich Klaasen struggled to keep the momentum. The pair managed only 49 runs in 38 balls, slowing the innings.

Despite attempts to accelerate at the end, Originals were restricted to 163 for 6 in their 100 balls. The disciplined bowling by the Spirit restricted further damage.

In reply, London Spirit began steadily with Warner leading the charge. Kane Williamson struggled early, scoring just 19 runs in 20 balls. Warner then shifted gears, attacking bowlers Josh Tongue, Lewis Gregory, and Noor Ahmad with aggressive strokes.

Warner’s powerful innings kept Spirit in the hunt, but the team struggled to keep pace. With 55 runs needed off 21 balls, Ashton Turner broke the shackles with a six off Noor Ahmad. Turner and Jamie Overton’s late surge brought the chase close.

However, Warner and Turner fell in quick succession. Overton’s attacking shots brought the equation down to 17 runs off the final set. Despite his efforts, Overton was run out attempting a quick double.

Scott Currie’s composed bowling in the final over ensured Manchester Originals held their nerve. He conceded just six runs to seal a 10-run victory.

Brief Scores:

Manchester Originals 163/6 in 100 balls (Jos Buttler 46, Phil Salt 31; Jamie Overton 2-26)
London Spirit 153/6 in 100 balls (David Warner 71, Jamie Overton 19; Josh Tongue 3-29)
