Black Caps selector Sam Wells has resigned from his position after serving for nearly two years, the International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed on Friday. His tenure included a period of major change for New Zealand cricket, with the departure of long-time coach Gary Stead and the Test retirement of former captain Tim Southee.
Under Wells’ watch, New Zealand achieved landmark victories, including a rare 3-0 Test series triumph against India away from home last year, and a place in the ICC Champions Trophy final earlier this year.
Wells’ Statement on His Resignation
“Serving as selection manager for the Black Caps over the past two years has been a tremendous privilege,” Wells said, as quoted by the ICC.
“I am deeply grateful to NZC (New Zealand Cricket) for the opportunity to contribute to the national side.”
“It has been an honour to work alongside the dedicated coaches, talented players, and committed support staff around New Zealand. While I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in the role, I have made the difficult decision to step down. This will allow me to prioritise my personal and professional commitments outside of cricket. I remain a proud supporter of the Black Caps and will continue cheering the team on as they build toward future success,” he added.
Recent Series Success for New Zealand
In his final months, New Zealand dominated Zimbabwe in a 2-0 away Test series. The second match produced their biggest-ever Test win — by an innings and 359 runs. The Kiwis also won the T20I tri-nation series in July in Zimbabwe. They edged South Africa by three runs in a tense final.
The Black Caps will now prepare for a three-match T20I series against Australia at home, starting October 1. Later that month, they will take on England in a white-ball series featuring three ODIs and three T20Is.
