When Indian cricket is discussed, Sunil Gavaskar’s name naturally commands respect. The legendary opener, hailed as one of the greatest batters of all time, has long been a guiding force for Indian cricket. For decades, players like Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman, and Virender Sehwag openly leaned on his wisdom. However, the current generation — including Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Shubman Gill — are often accused of charting their own path without seeking his advice.
Ghavri disappointed with lack of respect
Former India pacer Karsan Ghavri expressed disappointment that modern players do not turn to Gavaskar for guidance, despite his continued presence in the game as a respected commentator.
“Gavaskar has been doing commentary for the last 25 years. His comments are precious to any young player. It’s very unfortunate that our own players don’t go to him. Even foreign players approach him for advice. Every Indian batter, including Shubman Gill, should learn from him,” Ghavri said on the Vickey Lalwani Show.
Reports of tension with Rohit and Kohli
Ghavri also pointed to reports of a cold shoulder from Rohit Sharma towards Gavaskar earlier this year. During the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, stories emerged that Rohit had allegedly complained to the BCCI about Gavaskar’s remarks. Similarly, tensions surfaced between Kohli and Gavaskar during the IPL when the former captain reacted negatively to Gavaskar’s comments on his strike rate.
‘Respect the great man’
Ghavri insisted that Kohli, Rohit, and Gill should show more respect to Gavaskar instead of dismissing his opinions.
“It is nonsense. You may be Rohit Sharma or Virat Kohli, but you must respect the great man. If Gavaskar says something, it is for your own good. His way of criticism is constructive and should be taken positively,” Ghavri remarked.
