Shreyas Iyer’s exclusion from India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad has created a storm across the cricket fraternity. The 15-man squad, announced in Mumbai on Tuesday, left fans and experts questioning the selectors’ decision. Many accused the BCCI of favouritism, while Ajit Agarkar’s explanation at the press conference drew sharp criticism, with some calling it “nonsensical.”
Iyer’s Numbers Back His Case
Iyer had every reason to expect a place in the team. He smashed 604 runs in IPL 2025 at a blistering strike rate of 175.1 and followed it up with 345 runs for Mumbai in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy at a strike rate of 188.5. These performances made his omission all the more surprising and frustrating for supporters.
Agarkar Defends Selection Call
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar tried to clarify the decision. “With regard to Shreyas, who can he replace? No fault of his, nor is it ours. At the moment, you can just pick 15. So he will have to wait for his chance,” Agarkar explained when asked about the snub.
BCCI Denies Bias Against Iyer
What stoked the fire further was Iyer not even making it to the reserves. This fueled speculation that the batter was not in the committee’s good books. However, a BCCI official dismissed such claims. “A seasoned player like Shreyas can’t be named in the reserves, please understand this! If you pick him, he plays in the XI. No one has any grudge against Iyer. He will get his chances and play many matches for India in all three formats. It’s just that right now, he didn’t fit in,” the source said.
What’s Next for Shreyas Iyer?
For now, Iyer will have to wait until October to push his case for the T20 World Cup. India are scheduled to play 10 T20Is after the Asia Cup — five in Australia and five at home against South Africa. The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, beginning on November 26, will also give him another chance to prove his worth.
