Speculation around Shreyas Iyer’s future escalated this week after multiple reports claimed he was the frontrunner to succeed Rohit Sharma as India’s ODI captain. With Rohit nearing the twilight of his career, it was suggested that the BCCI was considering easing his leadership burden, with Iyer being seen as a strong contender.
Saikia Denies Any Discussion
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, however, dismissed the talk. Speaking to Hindustan Times, he said, “That’s news to me. There have been no such discussions.” His remarks came just a day after a BCCI source told NDTV that Iyer was “leading the race” to take over in the 50-over format.
Iyer’s Omission Raises Eyebrows
The rumours gained traction after Iyer’s surprise omission from India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar addressed the snub during the announcement, saying, “With regards to Shreyas, it’s not his fault, nor is it ours. It’s just that you can pick 15, and at the moment he’ll have to wait for his chance.”
Consistent Performances Strengthen His Case
Despite missing out, Iyer’s recent numbers tell their own story. He finished as India’s highest run-scorer in the Champions Trophy 2025, amassing 243 runs in five games at an average of 48.60. In IPL 2025, he had his best-ever season, scoring 604 runs in 17 innings at a strike rate of 175.07, including six fifties.
Since India’s last T20 World Cup triumph, the Mumbai batter has played 26 T20Is, piling up 949 runs at an average of 49.94 and a strike rate of 179.73. His tally includes a century and seven half-centuries, with a career-best of 130*.
Future Still Wide Open
For now, the BCCI has made it clear that no captaincy decision has been made. But Iyer’s form and consistency keep him firmly in the spotlight, ensuring his name will continue to come up whenever India looks beyond Rohit Sharma.
