Sourav Ganguly Era Begins: Former India Captain Named Head Coach of Pretoria Capitals

Sourav Ganguly Named Pretoria Capitals Head Coach

Former India captain and ex-BCCI president Sourav Ganguly is set to embark on a fresh journey in cricket. The iconic left-hander has been named the head coach of Pretoria Capitals for the upcoming edition of the SA20 league in South Africa.

The franchise announced the news on Instagram with a celebratory post:

“The Prince is all set to bring a royal flair to the Capitals camp! We are ecstatic to announce Sourav Ganguly as our new head coach. The Centurion awaits.”

First Franchise Head Coach Role

This will be Ganguly’s first official stint as head coach in franchise cricket. Previously, he served as Team Director at Delhi Capitals between 2018 and 2019 before stepping down to take over as BCCI president.

Last year, Ganguly was also appointed Director of Cricket at JSW, owners of multiple franchises including Delhi Capitals, a role that hinted at his move towards coaching responsibilities. Now, he will guide Pretoria Capitals and also oversee their squad planning during the SA20 auction on September 9, 2025.

Change in Leadership

Ganguly replaces Jonathan Trott, who left the role after just one season in charge. Under Trott, Pretoria Capitals endured a disappointing 2025 campaign, managing only two wins in 10 league matches and missing the knockouts.

The franchise bid farewell to Trott with a heartfelt message:

“Jonathan Trott, forever grateful for your leadership and unwavering dedication to the team. All the best on your next adventure! Once a Capital, always a Capital!”

Trott, who is also the head coach of Afghanistan, is expected to continue in that role for the 2026 T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.

Ganguly on Coaching India

When asked earlier about the possibility of coaching the Indian national team, Ganguly admitted he had not given it much thought but remained open to the idea in the future.

“I never really thought about it because I got into different roles. I finished (playing) in 2013 and then became BCCI President. We’ll see what the future holds. I’m just 50 (53), so let’s see what happens. I’m open to it,” he told PTI.

A Storied Career

Widely regarded as one of India’s finest captains, Ganguly represented the country in 113 Tests and 311 ODIs, scoring over 18,000 international runs. He famously led India to the 2003 World Cup final and laid the foundation for a fearless new generation of Indian cricketers.

Post-retirement, Ganguly served as CAB President before becoming BCCI President in 2019, a role he held until 2022 when Roger Binny succeeded him.

Now, with the Pretoria Capitals, Ganguly begins a new chapter, this time in the dugout, aiming to bring his trademark aggression and leadership into the coaching arena.
