Ajinkya Rahane Steps Down as Mumbai Captain Ahead of Ranji Season

Ajinkya Rahane Steps Down as Mumbai Captain Before Ranji

Veteran India batter Ajinkya Rahane has stepped down from the role of Mumbai captain ahead of the upcoming Ranji Trophy season. The 37-year-old said it was the right time to groom a new leader, while reaffirming his commitment to the team as a player.

Rahane, who has scored over 14,000 runs in 201 first-class matches, will continue to represent Mumbai as a senior batter. Mumbai open their Ranji Trophy campaign on October 15 against Jammu and Kashmir.

Rahane’s Statement

Announcing his decision on X (formerly Twitter), Rahane wrote:

“Captaining and winning the championships with the Mumbai team has been an absolute honour. With the new domestic season ahead, I believe it is the right time to groom a new leader, and hence, I have decided not to continue in the captaincy role. I remain fully committed to giving my best as a player, and will continue my journey with MCA to help us win more trophies.”

A Captaincy Legacy of Success

Under Rahane’s leadership, Mumbai clinched the Ranji Trophy title in 2023–24, defeating Vidarbha in the final. He also led the side to victory in the Irani Cup 2024–25 against the Rest of India, and before that, guided Mumbai to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in the 2022–23 season. These achievements cemented his reputation as one of the finest leaders in Indian domestic cricket.

Test Cricket Ambitions Still Alive

Despite stepping aside as captain, Rahane has not given up on his international ambitions. Earlier this year during India’s England tour, he reiterated his desire to play Test cricket again, with his last appearance coming against West Indies in 2023.

“I still want to play Test cricket. I’m really passionate about it. I tried to have conversations with the selectors but got no response. As a player, all I can do is keep enjoying my cricket and give my best every time,” Rahane told Sky Sports.
