The All India Men’s Senior Selection Committee, chaired by Ajit Agarkar, will meet on August 19 in Mumbai to finalize India’s Asia Cup squad. With several tough calls to make, a last-minute push has emerged — former chief selector Kris Srikkanth has urged Agarkar to include teenage sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi in the squad.
Suryavanshi’s meteoric rise
Just 14 years old, Suryavanshi has already taken Indian cricket by storm. He announced himself with a blistering 35-ball century for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2025, the fastest by any Indian in the tournament’s history.
He then carried his form into the U19 ODI series against England, where he amassed 355 runs in five matches, including a brilliant 143. Now named in the U19 squad for the Australia series, Suryavanshi is being tipped for an even bigger stage.
Srikkanth’s strong words
“You have to play boldly. Don’t make him wait. Don’t say things like let him mature. He is already playing with remarkable maturity. His shot-making has been on another level. If I were chairman, I would definitely have him in the 16,” Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel.
Samson’s uncertain spot
While Sanju Samson scored three T20I centuries last year, his struggles against short-pitched bowling, particularly against Jofra Archer in the England series, have raised doubts. Srikkanth believes Samson is no longer a sure pick and instead backed youngsters like Abhishek Sharma, Sai Sudharsan, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Suryavanshi as India’s top opening options.
“My first-choice opener is Abhishek Sharma. Alongside him, I’d pick two from Yashasvi Jaiswal, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, and Sai Sudharsan. If I were a selector, I’d keep Vaibhav in the 15 for the T20 World Cup,” he explained.
