India’s premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah has faced criticism for not playing every Test, with some questioning his workload management. Despite being the No.1 Test bowler and finishing the Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy with 17 wickets, including two five-wicket hauls, critics highlighted that India’s victories came in games he did not feature.
Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar even suggested that the team management should consider moving on from Bumrah if he cannot play every match.
Sandhu Backs Bumrah Strongly
1983 World Cup winner Balvinder Singh Sandhu, however, came out strongly in Bumrah’s defence, calling the criticism unfair and hypocritical.
“In these seven years, how many batsmen have skipped series due to injury or rest? Nobody questions them. But when a fast bowler does it, everyone is quick to criticise. Fast bowling is brutal,” Sandhu wrote in his Mid-Day column.
Revealing Numbers on Workload
Sandhu pointed out striking statistics to highlight Bumrah’s workload:
- Bumrah averages just 3.2 rest days for every playing day.
- Mohammed Siraj averages 3.5, and Mohammed Shami 3.7.
- Both Bumrah and Shami have also missed matches due to injuries.
“These numbers show how demanding the role is. Bumrah is not resting more than others; in fact, he’s often working harder,” Sandhu added.
Why Bumrah’s Body Needs Protection
Sandhu explained that Bumrah’s unique action puts additional strain on his body.
“Research shows 40% of a pacer’s speed comes from the run-up. Bumrah has a shorter run-up, which means he must generate pace using his body, adding extra load on his back and legs. Even legends like Kapil Dev, Wasim Akram, Richard Hadlee, and Malcolm Marshall weren’t spared injuries despite smoother actions,” he noted.
Focus Shifts to Asia Cup 2025
Bumrah is set to return for the Asia Cup in the UAE, starting September 9. India begin their campaign against the UAE on September 10, with the high-voltage clash against Pakistan scheduled for September 14.
Sandhu urged fans and experts to appreciate Bumrah’s skills instead of criticising him for workload management.
“Instead of hammering these bowlers for ‘choosing matches,’ enjoy the brilliance they bring whenever they play. That’s what really matters,” he concluded.
