BCCI Extends Ajit Agarkar’s Contract, Plans to Replace One Selector

BCCI Extends Ajit Agarkar’s Contract, Eyes Selector Change

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has taken key decisions regarding the senior men’s selection committee. Chairman Ajit Agarkar has been handed a contract extension until June 2026, a reward for his successful tenure that saw India end their ICC trophy drought. The extension was offered before the start of IPL 2025, and the former fast bowler accepted the offer.

Agarkar, who became chief selector in 2023, oversaw India’s T20 World Cup triumph in 2024, followed by the ICC Champions Trophy win earlier this year. Under his guidance, India also reached the 2023 ODI World Cup final. Beyond limited-overs success, he managed a smooth Test transition as stalwarts Ravichandran Ashwin, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli retired in the past nine months. With Shubman Gill as captain, India held England to a draw in a five-match away Test series.

A BCCI official told The Indian Express, “Under his tenure the Indian team had won titles and had seen transition (of the Tests and T20) too. The BCCI had extended his contract till June 2026, and he had accepted the offer a few months back.”

BCCI to Remove One Selector

While largely satisfied with the current panel of Agarkar, SS Das, Subroto Banerjee, Ajay Ratra, and S Sharath, the BCCI is planning a reshuffle. Reports suggest Sharath, who joined the senior committee in January 2023, could be replaced during the September annual general meeting. Extensions for Das and Banerjee remain uncertain, while Ratra, appointed in September 2024, will soon complete a year.

Applications for New Roles

The BCCI will also invite applications for the senior women’s and junior men’s selection committees. With Neetu David completing five years as women’s head selector, alongside Arati Vaidya and Mithu Mukherjee, changes are expected. As per board rules, selectors cannot serve beyond a five-year term.
