England head coach Brendon McCullum has called on supporters to remain patient and trust the team’s bold approach despite an eight-wicket loss to Australia in the first Ashes Test in Perth. The defeat, which came inside two days, has sparked criticism back home, but McCullum insists England will not abandon their aggressive “Bazball” style.
No Plans to Change England’s Approach
Speaking after the match, McCullum encouraged fans to stay confident in the team’s direction.
“Keep the faith,” he said when asked about his message to England’s supporters.
He acknowledged that England’s high-risk, high-reward philosophy won’t always work, but stressed that the mentality is key to believing in their abilities.
“Sometimes we get beaten and it looks ugly, but there are times when that mindset keeps us believing when we step out to play.
We don’t always get it right, but sticking to our belief gives us the best chance. Being one-nil down doesn’t change that.”
McCullum added that the squad must remain calm and united as they prepare to bounce back in Brisbane.
England’s Tough Ashes Track Record
England’s struggles in Australia continued with the collapse in Perth. Since their last Ashes series win on Australian soil 15 years ago, they have failed to register a single Test victory, losing 14 and drawing two.
Despite a promising start at 160–5 on Day 1, England lost five wickets for just 12 runs, finishing with 172. They regained control briefly by bowling out Australia for 132, but another collapse in the second innings—from 65–1 to 95–6—handed Australia a comfortable chase of 205.
Focus Shifts to Day-Night Test in Brisbane
The second Test, a day-night encounter in Brisbane starting December 4, now becomes crucial for England as they try to level the series with four matches remaining.
