West Indies produced a strong all-round performance to beat Pakistan by five wickets in the rain-hit second ODI on Sunday, August 10. The win helped them square the series at 1-1. Roston Chase played a key role with both bat and ball. Sherfane Rutherford’s aggressive stroke play shifted the momentum in the hosts’ favour.
Earlier, Jayden Seales bowled with precision to claim 3 for 23 in seven overs. His spell restricted Pakistan to 171 for seven in 37 overs before rain disrupted play. After the interruption, West Indies were given a revised target of 181 runs from 35 overs. They chased it down with five balls to spare.
Early Breakthroughs Put Pakistan Under Pressure
Pakistan, sent in to bat by Shai Hope, struggled to find rhythm. Openers Saim Ayub and Abdullah Shafique hit occasional boundaries but were tied down by dot balls. Seales struck twice in quick succession, removing Ayub and Babar Azam — the latter for a duck — in the same over.
Mohammad Rizwan scored just 4 off 23 balls, slowing the innings further before rain paused play. After the break, debutant Jediah Blades took his maiden wicket by dismissing Shafique. Regular breakthroughs from West Indies’ bowlers kept Pakistan on the back foot. Hassan Nawaz’s late burst of 32 from 3.1 overs added some momentum, but rain washed out the final three overs.
Rutherford’s Onslaught Turns the Game
West Indies’ chase began shakily as Hasan Ali took two early wickets. Rizwan introduced spin to slow the scoring and raise the pressure. With the required rate climbing, Rutherford launched a fierce counter-attack. He hit 17 runs off one over from Shaheen Shah Afridi. He followed it up with 20 runs off Salman Agha’s next over.
Mohammad Nawaz dismissed Hope and Rutherford, but Roston Chase remained calm. Two well-timed sixes from him lowered the asking rate. The hosts kept accumulating runs and crossed the finish line with five balls to spare.
The deciding third ODI will be played on August 12 at the same venue, with the series now level at 1-1.
