Chennai Super Kings are set for a major overhaul ahead of the IPL 2026 season, and one of the biggest decisions involves releasing Sri Lankan fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana, despite having retained him for ₹13 crore before the previous mega auction.
The move comes soon after CSK’s blockbuster trade that saw Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran move to Rajasthan Royals, with Sanju Samson joining CSK in return.
Pathirana’s Decline in Form Led to Tough Call
Pathirana burst onto the scene in late 2022 with his slingy Malinga-style action and exceptional death-overs skills. Across 32 matches, he picked up 47 wickets with an economy of 8.68, becoming Dhoni’s trusted finisher with the ball.
However, in IPL 2025, the story changed dramatically.
After attempting to tweak his bowling action, he struggled with control:
- Economy rate shot past 10
- A surge in wides and no-balls
- 13 wickets but reduced impact at crucial stages
With CSK finishing last in IPL 2025, the management felt the need to reset their bowling group.
Reports suggest CSK may attempt to buy Pathirana back at a lower price, using the freed ₹13 crore to rebuild the squad more efficiently.
Other Players CSK Are Likely to Release
CSK are expected to part ways with two more overseas players:
Devon Conway – ₹6.25 crore
Brilliant in 2023 (670+ runs) but managed only 156 runs in six innings in 2025.
Rachin Ravindra – retained via RTM
Showed glimpses of brilliance but lacked consistency, finishing with 191 runs in eight innings.
Shift in Strategy: From ‘Dad Army’ to Youth-Driven Squad
After years of relying on experience, CSK seem committed to a younger, more explosive core.
Talents like:
- Ayush Mhatre
- Urvil Patel
- Dewald Brevis
…have impressed with fearless stroke play and high strike rates. The management reportedly wants to give them bigger roles going forward.
Meanwhile, Sanju Samson’s arrival boosts CSK’s top order and wicketkeeping strength. Many already see him as MS Dhoni’s long-term successor at the franchise.
