Dale Steyn Hails Virat Kohli’s Hunger at 38, Praises Rohit’s Record-Breaking Knock

Dale Steyn Praises Kohli’s Hunger at 38

South African fast-bowling great Dale Steyn has showered massive praise on Virat Kohli after the Indian superstar smashed his 52nd ODI century in the opening match against South Africa. Steyn said Kohli’s enthusiasm and commitment at this stage of his career is something most players his age simply do not possess.

“Most 37–38-year-olds don’t enjoy leaving home — but Kohli still relishes the grind”

Speaking on JioStar, Steyn said that unlike many players in their late 30s who struggle with the travel and intensity of international cricket, Kohli remains mentally fresh and hungry to perform.

“Most 37 or 38-year-olds hate leaving home, their kids, their dogs. But he’s still excited to play for India. You see it in his running, his fielding, his dives — he’s mentally young,” Steyn said.

Steyn highlighted that with more than 300 ODIs across 15–16 years, Kohli’s experience has become second nature to him.

“Even if he turned up here after three days of rain, nothing would affect his preparation. He visualises well, stays mentally strong, and sees the ball so clearly. That’s what world-class players do.”

Steyn: “His excitement to play says everything”

The Proteas legend added that Kohli’s enthusiasm for the sport remains unmatched.

“A key thing he said is that he’s excited to play — that’s rare at this age. But that’s why he’s one of the best.”

Rohit Sharma’s Special Knock Gets Steyn’s Applause Too

Steyn also praised Rohit Sharma for his fluent 57 off 51 balls — an innings where Rohit shattered Shahid Afridi’s long-standing world record for most sixes in ODI cricket.

“He batted beautifully,” Steyn said. “He had one moment where Tony de Zorzi had a chance, but after that, Rohit capitalised. His cover drives, flicks, coming down the track — he put bowlers under pressure.”

Steyn recalled one shot that captured the essence of Rohit’s innings:

“Third man was up, point was up, and he gently guided the ball past short third man for four. Brilliant game awareness. He’s a fantastic batter — I loved watching him, even though I never got him out.”
