Decks Cleared for Shubman Gill’s Return to India’s T20I Squad, But…

Shubman Gill Nears Return for T20Is

Shubman Gill is inching closer to a full comeback from his neck injury and could rejoin the Indian T20I squad in Cuttack by December 6, subject to clearing his final match-simulation test.

Gill Nearing Full Fitness After Neck Injury

Shubman Gill is on track for a much-awaited return after spending several weeks on the sidelines due to a neck injury suffered during the first Test against South Africa in Kolkata. The India ODI and Test captain has been undergoing a carefully designed rehab programme at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru since his arrival on December 1.

According to a report in TOI, Gill has shown steady and consistent progress. Over the past few days, he has taken part in extended batting sessions aimed at checking his pain levels, range of motion, and stamina. With positive responses so far, the medical team has gradually stepped up his workload.

In addition to batting, Gill has begun fielding and catching drills, indicating that he is transitioning toward full-intensity practice. The CoE staff remains hopeful, but they are ensuring no shortcuts are taken, given Gill’s importance to India’s upcoming fixtures.

Return Timeline Depends on Final Clearance

Gill is yet to receive his official Return to Play (RTP) clearance. The decisive step will be a match-simulation test scheduled in the next 48 hours. If he completes this session smoothly, he will likely be approved to join the squad in Cuttack by December 6, barring any last-minute issues.

The Ajit Agarkar–led selection committee has been updated about his recovery, and Gill’s name is expected in the T20I squad list with the usual note: subject to fitness.

Team management is confident about his progress, though they’re ready with backup plans. In case there is even minor uncertainty, Gill may be rested for the opening game, although this scenario currently appears unlikely.

Injury Timeline and Recovery Journey

Gill’s neck issue forced him to miss not only the Guwahati Test but also the ongoing ODI series against South Africa. After consultation with a spine specialist in Mumbai, he was advised to rest and step away from competitive cricket.

With rehabilitation progressing smoothly and no setbacks so far, Gill’s return to the field now looks like a matter of completing one final hurdle.
