Former India spinner Maninder Singh has expressed his disappointment over the exclusion of Shreyas Iyer and Yashasvi Jaiswal from India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad, which begins on September 9.
“I was a little disappointed not to see these two names. Jaiswal, I think, is ready for any format and he should be there in any team,” Singh told PTI Videos.
Iyer’s Continued Non-Selection
Speaking about Shreyas Iyer, Singh questioned why the talented batter keeps getting left out. “I really don’t know why he keeps getting left out of the Indian side because he’s such a fantastic player, so positive, and contributes a lot to the team. But then this has been happening for years,” he said.
Singh warned that continual non-selection could result in players being forgotten over time. “If you don’t give him a chance now, in a couple of years, you’ll find somebody else, and these opportunities are lost. That shouldn’t happen,” he added.
Asia Cup as World Cup Preparation
India will enter the Asia Cup as defending champions under the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav. The tournament is seen as crucial preparation for next year’s ICC World Cup at home.
Shubman Gill Groomed as Future Captain
Maninder Singh also commented on Shubman Gill’s appointment as vice-captain. “I feel the selectors have decided he’s going to be our future captain. If that’s the plan, then making him vice-captain makes sense, especially since Suryakumar Yadav may have just another two years in T20 cricket. This way, Gill is ready to lead when the time comes,” he explained.
