Gautam Gambhir and Shubman Gill are facing heavy criticism after India’s rare home Test whitewash, with many questioning their choices to overlook Abhimanyu Easwaran and Sarfaraz Khan, who were in exceptional form in domestic red-ball cricket.
Questions Over Gambhir and Gill’s Selection Philosophy
A former BCCI selector pointed out that while the selection committee might bear the brunt of the blame for not picking Easwaran and Sarfaraz, it’s important to question whether Gambhir and Gill truly believe in these players’ abilities.
India has only been whitewashed at home three times in their Test history, with two of those losses occurring under Gambhir’s tenure. The most recent clean sweep was a 0-3 defeat to New Zealand, just last year. For a team once regarded as the No. 1 Test side, the fall from grace is stark.
Gambhir’s Choices Under Scrutiny
Much of the blame has fallen on Gautam Gambhir. His fixation on all-rounders and refusal to make changes has sparked widespread criticism. The decision to overlook Sarfaraz Khan and Abhimanyu Easwaran, both of whom were in fine domestic form, has left many questioning his leadership.
Agarkar’s Role and Gambhir-Gill Dynamic
There is a growing belief among fans that BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar is backing Gambhir’s vision, but the reality might be different. A former BCCI selector revealed that Agarkar’s hands are tied, as the final call lies with the coach and captain.
“People might blame Ajit and his committee for not selecting Abhimanyu and Sarfaraz, but then do the head coach (Gautam Gambhir) and new captain (Shubman Gill) have faith in their abilities? If not, what will Ajit alone do?” the former selector said.
Future Selection Options
Despite India’s recent struggles, the selection committee may now revisit alternatives such as Rajat Patidar, Ruturaj Gaikwad, or even Rinku Singh, with the aim of reinvigorating the squad.
