Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir has revealed that he regularly reminds Shubman Gill and the Test squad of last year’s painful 0-3 whitewash at home against New Zealand — a defeat that still stings and continues to shape India’s mindset today.
Gambhir believes that remembering tough moments is crucial to staying grounded and never taking success for granted.
A Defeat That Shook Indian Cricket
The 0-3 loss to New Zealand marked a dark chapter in India’s Test history. It was the first time India had ever lost all three matches of a home Test series with three or more games.
New Zealand arrived after a month-long camp, prepared to exploit India’s biggest strengths. They outplayed India on turning tracks, countered spin effectively, and built partnerships that silenced home crowds. The green surface at Bengaluru in the opening Test tilted luck their way, but their intent and preparation made the difference.
That series was Gambhir’s second in charge — and it cost India a place in the 2025 World Test Championship final, which they were favorites to reach.
Gambhir: “Some Memories Should Never Fade”
“I don’t think I can ever forget that series, and I shouldn’t,” Gambhir said on JioHotstar. “I remind the boys of it as well. It’s crucial to remember the past sometimes, so you never take anything for granted. Everyone thought we could easily beat New Zealand, but that’s the reality of the sport. For me, it’s important that the dressing room never forgets what happened against New Zealand. That experience drives us to never give an inch to the opposition.”
Focus on Home and Away Consistency
Gambhir also praised the team for their fight during the 2-2 series draw in England, calling it a sign of maturity and resilience.
“Being dominant at home alone isn’t enough if you aspire to win the World Test Championship. Performing away from home is equally important. What impressed me the most wasn’t just the results but the way the team fought every single day. That attitude matters more than anything,” he added.
India have already taken the lead in the ongoing West Indies series with a massive win in the opener and remain in control after Day 2 of the second Test in Delhi. A whitewash here could give them a crucial edge in the 2025-27 WTC cycle.
