Indian cricket had an emotional moment on August 24, when veteran batter Cheteshwar Pujara announced his retirement from all forms of the game. The 37-year-old ended a glorious career after 103 Tests, scoring 7,195 runs at an average of 43.60, with 19 centuries and 35 fifties. Over 15 years, Pujara became the backbone of India’s Test batting and played a crucial role in taking Indian cricket to new heights.
The Phone Call That Changed Everything
As tributes poured in, India pacer Jaydev Unadkat shared a personal story about how Pujara played a life-changing role in his career. Writing on X (formerly Twitter), Unadkat recalled how in 2010, when he was still a net bowler, he received a message from Pujara that set him on the path to the IPL.
“‘Hi Jaydev, this is Cheteshwar. I have had a word with Dada, and you have to go for the KKR trials. You are bowling very well, so keep it up.’ This was our first conversation after a Ranji Trophy nets session,” Unadkat wrote.
That call led to Unadkat’s trials with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), marking the start of his IPL journey.
More Than Just a Teammate
Unadkat also paid an emotional tribute to his Saurashtra teammate, highlighting not just Pujara’s determination and grit but also his lighter side.
“Your grit and determination will be remembered for generations. But I’ll also cherish the fun side—the FIFA battles, long card games, and silly arguments. Today, as you end your illustrious career, I feel proud and emotional. To me, you are a senior first, colleague second, and brother forever.”
