Afghanistan’s spin duo, Noor Ahmad and Mujeeb Ur Rahman, have been penalised by the International Cricket Council (ICC) after breaching the Code of Conduct during their crucial Asia Cup 2025 clash against Sri Lanka at Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.
The pair was reprimanded for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct, a decision that followed Afghanistan’s six-wicket loss, which knocked them out of the tournament. Sri Lanka’s victory secured their place in the Super Four stage.
Details of the Breaches
- Noor Ahmad was found guilty of Article 2.8, which covers “showing dissent at an Umpire’s decision.” The incident occurred in the 16th over when Noor disagreed with the umpire’s decision to call one of his deliveries a wide.
- Mujeeb Ur Rahman violated Article 2.2, which deals with “abuse of cricket equipment or clothing.” Mujeeb broke the stumps with his towel during the match, a display of frustration.
Demerit Points and Disciplinary Action
Both players were given one demerit point on their disciplinary records, marking their first offence in 24 months.
The charges were leveled by on-field umpires Asif Yaqoob and Virender Sharma, third umpire Faisal Afridi, and fourth umpire Rohan Pandit. Both Noor and Mujeeb accepted the sanctions proposed by Richie Richardson, the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, without a formal hearing.
Sri Lanka Moves Forward
With this win, Sri Lanka advances to the Super Four, where they’ll take on Bangladesh in the next match at Dubai International Stadium. Afghanistan’s loss means they’re eliminated from the tournament, and their hopes of advancing to the next round were dashed despite strong efforts.
