‘If Rahul Dravid Could Be Trolled…’: Uthappa Defends Gambhir Amid ‘Baseless’ Eden Criticism

Uthappa Defends Gambhir Amid Eden Test Criticism

Gautam Gambhir has come under heavy fire after India’s dramatic batting collapse at the Eden Gardens in the first Test against South Africa. But the former opener has now received strong backing from his ex-teammate Robin Uthappa, who slammed the criticism as “baseless” and a product of growing impatience among fans.

Gambhir Blamed for Eden Collapse, But Uthappa Hits Back

India fell apart in Kolkata, failing to chase a modest target of 124 and getting bowled out for just 93. The loss — India’s fourth home defeat in six Tests under Gambhir — sparked debates over selection calls, the decision to play on a turning track, and whether India’s home dominance is fading.

But Uthappa believes the outrage is misplaced.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, he said,

“Yaar, coach thodi jaake khel raha hai andar. The coach isn’t the one batting out there.”

He insisted that once the players take the field, the coach’s control is extremely limited.

‘Even Rahul Dravid Was Trolled’ — Uthappa Reminds Critics

Uthappa also pointed out that even Rahul Dravid — one of the greatest batters India has ever produced — had to deal with online trolling.

“When they criticised Rahul Dravid, it made no sense. Scoring 20–30 thousand international runs isn’t easy. If he can be trolled, anyone can be trolled,” he said.

India’s Mixed Test Record Under Gambhir

Since Gambhir took over as head coach, India have lost nine of their 18 Tests, including a shocking 0–3 home defeat to New Zealand in the previous WTC cycle and a series loss in Australia. Those results knocked India out of contention for the WTC final.

In the new cycle, India showed promise under Shubman Gill with a 2–2 series draw in England — but many still believe the team missed a golden opportunity against a depleted side led by Ben Stokes.
