India Batting Coach Shuts Down Talk on Kohli’s ODI Future After Record Ton

Kotak Rejects Talk on Virat Kohli’s ODI Future

India’s batting coach Sitanshu Kotak has strongly pushed back against the growing chatter around Virat Kohli’s long-term role in ODI cricket. After Kohli hammered his 52nd ODI century in the 17-run win over South Africa in Ranchi, Kotak made it clear that questioning his future makes no sense when he is performing at such a high level.

“Why Are We Even Discussing This?” — Kotak

Kotak expressed surprise at the ongoing debates surrounding Kohli and Rohit Sharma, especially after suggestions that India must start planning immediately for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

He dismissed the speculation, saying the discussions are completely unnecessary given Kohli’s current form and elite fitness.

“I really don’t know why we even need to think about this,” Kotak said. “He’s batting so well. Why should we talk about his future? His fitness, his performances — nothing is in doubt.”

No Long-Term Panic, Only Present Focus

Kotak clarified that the team management is not obsessing over long-term projections or building squads for tournaments four years away.

Instead, the focus remains on role clarity, consistency, and allowing experienced players to contribute freely.

“They (Rohit and Kohli) are brilliant. They’re performing and adding value. Within the team, we’re not discussing the 2027 World Cup at all,” he said.

Kohli’s Century Strengthens the Argument

Kohli’s superb knock in Ranchi only reinforced Kotak’s stance.

The veteran batter took charge during India’s innings, showing exactly why he is still among the most reliable players in white-ball cricket.

Kotak praised not just the runs but the manner in which Kohli carried the innings with responsibility and calmness.

“It was an outstanding knock,” Kotak said. “He took responsibility, showed his class, and proved again what makes him exceptional.”

He also brushed aside concerns about Kohli’s back discomfort, adding, “As far as I know, he’s absolutely fine.”
