India End Suspense Over Dhruv Jurel’s Fate for 1st South Africa Test: “Our Position Hasn’t Changed on Nitish Reddy”

India Confirm Dhruv Jurel for 1st SA Test; Reddy Misses Out

The suspense around Dhruv Jurel’s place in India’s playing XI for the opening Test against South Africa has finally ended. Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate confirmed on Wednesday that the in-form wicketkeeper-batter will be part of the starting line-up for the match beginning Friday at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Jurel will replace Nitish Kumar Reddy, who will sit out the first Test as India prioritizes balance and experience in their combination.

Jurel’s Stellar Form Leaves Selectors No Choice

Since mid-September 2025, the 24-year-old Jurel has been in blistering form, registering scores of 140, 56, 125, 44, 132* and 127* across five first-class innings — a run that boosted his average from 47.34 to 58.00.

Having already scored four centuries in his last five matches, including back-to-back unbeaten hundreds for India A against South Africa A in Bengaluru last week, Jurel’s selection seemed inevitable.

He also shone during the home Test series against West Indies, where he replaced the injured Rishabh Pant and notched his maiden international century.

India to Field Both Jurel and Pant

Addressing the media, Ten Doeschate said India plan to field both Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel in the same XI — an unusual but exciting combination.

“I think we’ve got a pretty good idea of the combination, and I don’t think you can leave them out for this Test — that’s the short answer,” Ten Doeschate said.

“I would be very surprised if you don’t see Dhruv and Rishabh playing in this Test this week.”

With Pant returning as vice-captain, India are set to feature two wicketkeeper-batters, signaling a strong batting-focused strategy for the high-stakes series opener.

Ten Doeschate on Nitish Reddy: “Our Position Hasn’t Changed”

Ten Doeschate acknowledged that Nitish Kumar Reddy, who featured in both Tests against West Indies, remains a key part of India’s long-term plans. However, given the importance of this series, he said the management’s priority was to choose the best possible combination for local conditions.

“In the West Indies series, Nitish played both Tests and we said it was important to groom him for the future. We still stand by that,” Ten Doeschate explained.

“But strategy comes first. The focus right now is on winning this series. Nitish didn’t get much game time in Australia, and given the conditions here, he might miss out in this Test.”

A Defining Moment for Jurel

With his consistent performances and mental toughness, Dhruv Jurel has rapidly become one of India’s most promising red-ball prospects. The Kolkata Test will mark another big step in his evolving journey — one that could solidify his place in India’s long-term Test plans.
