India Vs Pakistan Asia Cup Match Faces Legal Challenge: Plea Filed in Supreme Court

Plea Filed in Supreme Court to Ban India vs Pakistan Asia Cup Match

A plea has been filed in the Supreme Court of India to ban the upcoming India vs Pakistan match in the Asia Cup 2025, citing constitutional concerns.

Ketan Tirokdar, an activist from Pune, approached the Supreme Court arguing that the match, set for September 14 in Dubai, should be canceled due to the recent Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people. Tirokdar’s petition states that the match violates Article 21 of the Indian Constitution, which guarantees the right to life, liberty, dignity, and a healthy environment.

Tirokdar contends that hosting the match amidst ongoing tensions caused by Pakistani terrorism in Kashmir is harmful to national interests and dishonors the armed forces and citizens. He criticized the BCCI’s decision to treat Pakistan as a sporting friend amid the violence in Kashmir, calling it “draconian.”

India-Pakistan Bilateral Cricket Ban

The Indian government had previously confirmed that Indian athletes would not participate in bilateral sports events hosted in Pakistan, and vice versa. This decision stems from ongoing political tensions, but it does not impact participation in international and multilateral events like the Asia Cup or ICC tournaments.

A statement from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports clarified that Indian teams will not compete in events hosted in Pakistan, nor will Pakistani teams play in India. However, the government emphasized that both countries could still compete in international or multilateral events hosted in neutral locations.

This legal plea further complicates the already sensitive issue of India-Pakistan sporting relations.
