South Africa has announced its 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC Women’s ODI World Cup, and 17-year-old wicketkeeper-batter Karabo Meso has earned her maiden call-up. The Proteas, captained by Laura Wolvaardt, are set to face England and India in India and Sri Lanka, with the tournament beginning later this month.
Karabo Meso: A Rising Star
Karabo Meso, who made her debut for the senior South African team in a T20I against Sri Lanka in March 2025, has played two ODIs and five T20Is. Despite her young age, Meso has already gained valuable experience, including competing in two U19 Women’s T20 World Cups (2023 and 2025). Now, she will make her senior World Cup debut, adding to her growing reputation in women’s cricket.
Dane van Niekerk’s Exclusion
The squad announcement comes with a notable omission: former captain Dane van Niekerk. Despite reversing her retirement decision, van Niekerk was left out of the final squad. It had been anticipated that she would not feature in the World Cup team, even though she participated in the pre-tournament camp.
A Team Packed with Experience
Alongside the young Meso, the Proteas team boasts several seasoned players, including former captain Sune Luus, all-rounder Marizanne Kapp, power-hitter Chloe Tryon, and fast bowler Ayabonga Khaka. These experienced campaigners will play a key role in leading South Africa through the challenging matches ahead.
Preparations for the World Cup
Before the World Cup, South Africa will play a three-match ODI series against Pakistan in Lahore. The series, scheduled for September 16, 19, and 22, will serve as vital preparation for the main event.
Head Coach Mandla Mashimbyi’s Optimism
Proteas women’s head coach Mandla Mashimbyi expressed confidence in his team’s readiness for the tournament. “We’ve come a long way. From the qualification phase to now, it has always been about preparing for this moment,” Mashimbyi said. “We’ve put in the hard work, and we’re ready to send a squad that will make South Africa proud. We believe this team has what it takes to perform on the world stage, and we’re bringing that belief with us, supported by the nation.”
Upcoming Matches for South Africa
South Africa will open their World Cup campaign against England on October 3 in Guwahati, followed by a highly anticipated match against hosts India on October 9 in Visakhapatnam. With a strong squad and high expectations, the Proteas will aim to make a significant impact on the global stage.
