Keshav Maharaj’s 7-Wicket Haul Leaves 2nd Test in the Balance

Maharaj’s 7 Wickets Keep 2nd Test in Balance

Keshav Maharaj produced a stunning bowling display to claim 7 for 102, leaving the second Test between Pakistan and South Africa finely poised in Rawalpindi.

South Africa finished day two on 185/4, still trailing Pakistan by 148 runs. Debutant spinner Asif Afridi struck twice late in the day to keep the hosts in the contest.

Maharaj Spins Through Pakistan

Resuming on 259/5, Pakistan looked set for a big total before Maharaj ripped through the lower order. The left-arm spinner picked up five wickets on day two, completing his 12th five-wicket haul in Test cricket.

  • Agha Salman (45) was trapped leg-before.
  • Saud Shakeel (66) fell to a sharp turner in the slips.
  • Shaheen Afridi was bowled for a duck.
  • Sajid Khan (5) and Asif Afridi (4) were the final victims.

Pakistan lost their last five wickets for just 17 runs, folding for 333.

Asif Afridi Strikes on Debut

Pakistan struck back through debutant Asif Afridi, who removed Tony de Zorzi (55) and Dewald Brevis (0) in quick succession.

At stumps, Tristan Stubbs was unbeaten on 68 after a vital 113-run stand with De Zorzi. Kyle Verreynne remained not out on 10. South Africa trail by 148 runs and aim to level the series after losing the first Test in Lahore.

“The match is even at this stage and we need to get them out early on day three,” said Saud Shakeel.

“I’m really happy for Asif; he bowled brilliantly on debut.”

Early Blows for South Africa

Shaheen Afridi gave Pakistan a good start by dismissing Ryan Rickelton (14) early. Skipper Aiden Markram looked dangerous but fell for 32 trying to go after Sajid Khan.

Zorzi and Stubbs then steadied the innings before Asif’s double strike shifted momentum once again.

Coaches React After Day Two

South Africa’s batting coach Ashwell Prince was pleased with his team’s effort.

“Losing the last two wickets wasn’t ideal, but given the conditions, I’d say it was a pretty good day for us,” Prince said.

“We need to build on this tomorrow.”

Pakistan will look to make early inroads on day three, while South Africa aim to close the gap and set up a thrilling final two days.
