Leave Him Alone: Ravi Shastri Backs Sanju Samson as India Opener

Ravi Shastri Backs Sanju Samson as Asia Cup Opener

Former India coach Ravi Shastri has firmly advised the team not to tamper with Sanju Samson’s batting position in the Asia Cup. With Shubman Gill back in the squad as vice-captain, there’s pressure to slot him at the top of the order. But Shastri believes Samson should not be the one to make way.

“He [Samson] is most dangerous in the top three,” Shastri said during a media interaction. “That’s where he wins you matches. He should be left there. Even Gill will find it tough to displace him. Gill may come in for someone else, but Samson should continue as an opener. He has been consistent at the top with big runs and hundreds.”

Samson’s Record at the Top

Samson has been India’s standout T20I batter in recent times. In 2024, he scored 436 runs in 12 innings at a stellar average of 43.60 and an explosive strike rate of 180.16, smashing three centuries and a fifty. His ability to dominate powerplays has made him a key figure in India’s T20 setup.

Chief selector Ajit Agarkar had earlier clarified that Samson only opened with Abhishek Sharma due to the absence of Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Now, with Gill back, the assumption is that Samson could be pushed down or even benched. But Shastri disagrees, insisting that Gautam Gambhir and Suryakumar Yadav should keep faith in Samson at the top.

Spin to Rule in Dubai Conditions

Looking beyond the batting debate, Shastri also stressed on the importance of spin in the Asia Cup. With matches scheduled in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, he expects spin to dominate.

“Spin will definitely be flavour of the month,” he said. “Afghanistan might even play four spinners. India has the luxury of both wrist and finger spinners, and the combination will depend on conditions. In the heat and slow pitches, spinners will be vital.”

India’s Asia Cup Schedule

  • vs UAE – September 10, Dubai
  • vs Pakistan – September 14, Dubai
  • vs Oman – September 19, Abu Dhabi

The tournament kicks off with Samson under the spotlight. Whether Gill pushes for an opening slot or Shastri’s advice is followed, India’s batting order is set to be one of the most closely watched stories of the Asia Cup.
