Mitchell Starc Drops Shock T20I Retirement Bomb, Focus Now on Tests and ODIs

Mitchell Starc Retires from T20Is, Eyes Tests

Mitchell Starc, Australia’s premier left-arm fast bowler, has announced his retirement from T20 internationals. The 36-year-old confirmed that he wants to shift his full attention towards Test and ODI cricket, marking the end of an era in Australia’s white-ball setup.

Starc represented Australia in 65 T20Is, finishing with 79 wickets and playing a key role in the nation’s 2021 T20 World Cup triumph. His final outing in the format came at the 2024 T20 World Cup, jointly hosted by the USA and West Indies.

Starc Explains His Decision

In his retirement statement, Starc made it clear that Test cricket remains his ultimate priority.

“Test cricket is and has always been my highest priority. I have loved every minute of every T20 game I have played for Australia, particularly the 2021 World Cup, not just because we won but the incredible group and the fun along the way.”

Starc also highlighted the importance of preparing himself for the upcoming Test tour of India, the Ashes, and the 2027 ODI World Cup. With the 2026 T20 World Cup scheduled for next year, he believes his decision creates the right window for younger bowlers to step up.

“Looking ahead to an away Indian Test tour, the Ashes and an ODI World Cup in 2027, I feel this is my best way forward to remain fresh, fit and at my best for those campaigns. It also gives the bowling group time to prepare for the T20 World Cup in the matches leading into that tournament.”

Praise from Selectors

Chairman of selectors George Bailey lauded Starc’s T20I journey, praising his ability to change games with the ball.

“Mitch should be incredibly proud of his T20 career for Australia. He was an integral member of the 2021 World Cup-winning side and, as across all his cricket, had a great skill for blowing games open with his wicket-taking ability.”

Bailey confirmed that Cricket Australia will officially celebrate Starc’s T20 achievements at a later date but was pleased that the pacer remains fully committed to Tests and ODIs.

What Lies Ahead

While Starc has bid farewell to international T20s, he will continue playing domestic T20 leagues like the IPL, where he has been a marquee attraction. On the international stage, however, his focus is firmly on red-ball dominance and Australia’s quest for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
