India’s Test struggles deepened on Wednesday as South Africa clinched a 2-0 series win in Guwahati, marking the team’s third Test series defeat in just 16 months under head coach Gautam Gambhir. The disappointing run includes the 3-0 home whitewash to New Zealand, a 3-1 defeat in Australia, and now a comprehensive series loss to the Proteas.
India’s Test Record Under Gambhir
Gambhir’s tenure has seen India win 7 of their 19 Tests, lose 10, and draw 2, giving the team a win percentage of 36.82%—one of the lowest for an Indian coach in recent years. While his white-ball reputation has remained strong, India’s red-ball consistency has taken a hit during this transition phase.
BCCI Stands Firm: “No Knee-Jerk Reaction”
Despite mounting criticism, the BCCI has clarified that no coaching change is being considered at this stage. A senior board official, speaking to The Indian Express, underscored the importance of stability.
“The BCCI will not rush into any decision. The team is in a transition phase. As far as coach Gautam Gambhir is concerned, we will not take any decision now. The World Cup is around the corner and his contract runs until 2027. The board will speak to selectors and management but there will be no knee-jerk action.”
This indicates the board’s long-term faith in Gambhir, despite the immediate results.
Gambhir Responds: “Indian Cricket Is Important, I Am Not”
After the defeat, Gambhir reiterated that his future is entirely in the hands of the board.
“It is up to the BCCI to decide. I’ve said this from my first press conference as head coach — Indian cricket is important, I’m not,” he said during the post-match briefing.
He also reminded critics of his successes that often get overshadowed during difficult phases.
“People forget quickly. I’m the same guy who got results in England with a young team. Everyone remembers the New Zealand whitewash, but forget the Champions Trophy and Asia Cup wins. I’m the same guy who delivered those too.”
