One Ball, 13 Runs: Sanju Samson’s Explosive Knock Ahead of Asia Cup

Sanju Samson Hits 13 Runs Off One Ball in KCL

Sanju Samson produced fireworks in the Kerala Cricket League, smashing 13 runs off a single delivery while opening the innings for Kochi Blue Tigers — a statement knock with the Asia Cup just two weeks away.

Samson’s Power-Packed Innings

The star India wicketkeeper-batter blasted 89 off 46 balls, striking four boundaries and nine towering sixes at a blistering strike rate of 193.48. The highlight came in the fifth over against Sijomon Joseph. The bowler overstepped, and Samson punished the no-ball with a massive six over extra cover. He then made full use of the free hit, launching another six, before adding a run to make it 13 from one ball.

Role Uncertainty in Asia Cup

Despite his form, Samson’s place in India’s Asia Cup XI remains uncertain. The selectors named Shubman Gill as vice-captain, virtually assuring him a top-order spot. Samson, meanwhile, has been shuffled between roles in recent matches.

In the Kerala League, he initially batted in the middle order, sparking speculation that he might be tested in a similar role for India. However, on August 24, he returned to his familiar opening slot and hammered 121 runs, guiding Kochi to victory.

Selectors’ Stand

Chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar clarified Samson’s recent opportunities, saying he featured in the XI largely because regular openers were unavailable.

“Sanju was playing because Shubman and Yashasvi weren’t available at that point. Abhishek’s performances, meanwhile, make him very hard to ignore, plus his bowling is useful,” Agarkar explained.

Samson’s fiery form, however, has now given the team management plenty to think about ahead of the Asia Cup.
