Pat Cummins is unlikely to feature in Australia’s three-match T20I series against New Zealand, with Cricket Australia (CA) opting to give its captain a well-earned break before the Ashes. The five-Test series at home later this year is being treated as the ultimate priority.
Back Stiffness and Workload Management
According to CODE Sports, Cummins has been experiencing back stiffness since his return from the Caribbean last month. He is scheduled to undergo precautionary scans, having already missed the recent white-ball series against the West Indies and South Africa. CA is treading carefully, ensuring its leader remains fit for the longer format.
Hazlewood on Individual Prep Plans
Speaking on Thursday, Josh Hazlewood highlighted how each Test pacer is managing preparations differently.
“The Test guys will probably play two or three Shield games, but everyone’s on their own program,” Hazlewood said. “For me, regular game time and bowling multiple spells in a day is the best way to stay sharp.”
His comments underline the challenge of balancing workload with match readiness.
Depth Concerns in Fast Bowling Ranks
Australia’s decision to rest Cummins comes at a tricky time, with fringe quicks Lance Morris, Spencer Johnson and Ben Dwarshuis all sidelined by injuries. That leaves added responsibility on Cummins, Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc and Scott Boland to carry the pace attack in the Ashes.
Eyes Firmly on the Ashes
With the marquee Test series looming large, Australia is taking no chances. Cummins is expected to return for the ODI series against India in October, while the T20Is against New Zealand, beginning October 1, will go ahead without him.
