Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have once again shown why they’re still the backbone of Indian cricket. The veteran duo produced a vintage performance in the third and final ODI against Australia, stitching together a commanding century stand to guide India to a 9-wicket victory at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
While Rohit rolled back the years with a classy unbeaten 121, Kohli silenced critics with a composed 74 not out after two consecutive ducks earlier in the series. Their fluent partnership not only sealed the match but also reignited conversations about their potential participation in the 2027 ODI World Cup.
The 2027 World Cup Debate Heats Up
The Indian team has seen a major transition over the past year, especially in Tests and T20Is, with both Rohit and Kohli stepping away from the shorter formats. As India begins to plan for the 2027 World Cup in South Africa, the spotlight has inevitably shifted to whether the two stalwarts will be part of the squad.
For batting legend Sunil Gavaskar, the answer is simple — if Rohit and Kohli want to play, they’ll play.
“The moment they made themselves available for this trip, it was clear they want to be there for the 2027 World Cup,” Gavaskar told India Today.
“And irrespective of what happens between now and then — whether they score runs or not — with the ability and experience they possess, if they’re available, they’ll be certainties in the squad.”
A Statement Knock From the Skipper
Rohit Sharma batted with composure and authority, bringing up his 33rd ODI century. He took his time early on, then accelerated with trademark ease to finish unbeaten on 121 off 125 balls.
Kohli, too, found his rhythm again, rebuilding confidence with a controlled 74 not out. For both men, it was a timely reminder of what they can bring to the table — not just in terms of runs, but in stability and leadership.
Rohit on Rekindling the Partnership
After the win, Rohit reflected on how special it felt to bat alongside Kohli again.
“It was a fantastic partnership after a long, long time. I think we haven’t had a 100-run partnership for a while. It was good to get that partnership from the team’s perspective,” Rohit said.
He also acknowledged the responsibility they carried after Shubman Gill’s dismissal.
“Looking at how we were placed at one point… it was an added responsibility on other batters, and it was a great partnership. We enjoyed every moment we spent out there, there was a lot of chatter between the two of us.”
The Road to South Africa 2027
While nothing is officially confirmed yet, their performances in Sydney have made one thing clear: Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli aren’t done with ODI cricket. If fitness and form hold, they’ll likely be front and center in India’s 2027 World Cup campaign.
