Shubman Gill’s inclusion in India’s Asia Cup squad has raised questions about the team’s top-order batting lineup. With Gill being the vice-captain, it’s almost certain that he’ll open alongside world No. 1 T20I batter, Abhishek Sharma. This leaves Sanju Samson, who had a productive year as a T20I opener while Gill was busy with ODIs and Tests, potentially out of the starting XI or relegated down the order.
Mohammad Kaif’s Proposal for No. 3 Spot
Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif has suggested an interesting solution to this dilemma. Kaif proposed that India coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav consider batting Sanju Samson at No. 3 in place of the current world No. 2 T20I batter, Tilak Varma. Kaif pointed out Samson’s experience and his ability to handle both pace and spin effectively. He also emphasized Samson’s IPL record, where he consistently scores 400-500 runs every season, making him a solid option against quality bowlers like Rashid Khan.
Samson’s Experience and Form
Kaif also highlighted Samson’s vast experience, noting that he is the most senior member of the Asia Cup squad, having made his debut in 2015. Despite not being able to feature in the T20 World Cup-winning squad of 2024, Samson showcased his brilliance when given a chance, scoring at a blistering strike rate of 180. His recent form in the Kerala Cricket League further strengthens his case for a spot in the playing XI.
Uncertainty Behind the Stumps
Another factor affecting Samson’s position is the inclusion of wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma, which puts Samson’s place behind the stumps in doubt. Aakash Chopra, a former cricketer, believes that while Samson has performed well in his recent outings, his effectiveness declines when batting lower down the order. Chopra pointed out that Samson’s numbers at positions 1 to 3 in T20Is are impressive, with over 6,000 runs at a strike rate of 140. However, his statistics drop significantly when batting at positions 4 to 7, with a poor average of 20 and strike rate of 126 in 98 matches.
As India gears up for the Asia Cup, it remains to be seen how the team management balances the need for experience with the form of younger players like Tilak Varma.
