Sarfaraz Khan continues his rampant form in domestic cricket, raising hopes for a spot in India’s upcoming home series against West Indies and South Africa.
Century Number Two This Season
The 27-year-old right-hander smashed yet another century for Mumbai on Tuesday, playing against Haryana in the Buchi Babu Invitational Tournament. Sarfaraz reached the milestone in the final session of Day 1, needing just 99 balls to reach triple figures, finishing with 111 runs before being dismissed by Parth Vats. His innings featured a massive six off Haryana’s Ishant Bharadwaj, and he celebrated the feat by removing his helmet to soak in the applause from his teammates.
This comes after an explosive start to the domestic season, where Sarfaraz scored 138 not out against TNCA XI, hitting ten boundaries and six sixes. In both innings, he displayed his aggressive mindset, attacking from ball one and refusing to let bowlers dictate terms.
Battling Through Adversity
Even while struggling with cramps during his knock against Haryana, Sarfaraz persevered to reach his century, sending a clear message to chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir.
With both Karun Nair and Sai Sudharsan failing to cement their spots in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England, the No.3 slot and lower middle-order positions are open. Whether the management rewards Sarfaraz with a place in the upcoming home series remains to be seen.
Previous Test Opportunities
Sarfaraz was part of India’s squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, where India lost 1-3, but he didn’t play a single match. Last year, he made headlines with a 150-run knock in the Bengaluru Test against New Zealand, though he managed just 21 runs in the next four innings on spinning tracks at Pune and Mumbai.
He also featured in India A’s unofficial Tests against England Lions, scoring 92 in the first game but missing the second. So far, Sarfaraz has played 11 Tests, scoring 371 runs at an average of 37.10 — a clear indicator that he’s knocking on the door for a regular Test spot.
