India’s star all-rounder Shivam Dube’s historic 37-match unbeaten streak in T20 internationals came to an end on Friday, as Australia outclassed India by four wickets in the second T20I at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). It was a night to forget for India, who collapsed to one of their lowest totals in recent times.
Dube’s Unbeaten Run Finally Broken
Since December 2019, Dube had been part of 37 consecutive T20I matches without a defeat — the longest unbeaten run in men’s T20I history. The streak, which began after India’s loss to the West Indies in Trivandrum, was finally snapped in Melbourne as the Aussies dominated from start to finish.
The defeat also ended Jasprit Bumrah’s 24-match unbeaten streak, making it a double blow for India’s consistent performers.
Longest unbeaten streaks in T20Is:
- 37 – Shivam Dube (2019–2025)
- 27 – Pascal Murungi (2022–2024*)
- 24 – Jasprit Bumrah (2021–2025)
- 20 – Manish Pandey (2018–2020*)
- 19 – Mohammad Shahzad (2016–2021)
India’s Batting Collapse at MCG
Put in to bat first, India managed just 125 runs in 18.4 overs, with only Abhishek Sharma (68 off 37) showing any resistance. The rest of the batting order crumbled against Josh Hazlewood’s fiery spell of 3/13, which effectively sealed the match early.
In reply, Mitchell Marsh (42) and Travis Head (29) set the tone with a 51-run opening stand. Despite a few hiccups in the middle overs, Australia chased down the target comfortably in just 13.2 overs, taking a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
Historic Streak Ends, But Legacy Remains
For Dube, the end of his unbeaten run doesn’t diminish what has been a remarkable journey — a testament to India’s consistency in the T20 format over the past five years. His all-round abilities and calm presence have made him a crucial part of India’s setup, and this loss, though significant, may just fuel his hunger for redemption.
