Shreyas Iyer Rushed to ICU After Horror Injury in Sydney

Shreyas Iyer in ICU After Rib Injury Scare

Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a Sydney hospital following a serious injury sustained during the third ODI against Australia.

The incident occurred when Iyer took a stunning catch at backward point to dismiss Alex Carey. While completing the difficult grab, he injured his rib cage and was in visible agony. Medical staff attended to him immediately on the field before he walked off in pain.

Internal Bleeding Detected, ICU Admission

After returning to the dressing room, Iyer’s blood pressure dropped dangerously, prompting the medical team to rush him to the hospital.

According to a Times of India report, further tests revealed internal bleeding.

“Shreyas has been in ICU for the past couple of days. After the reports came in, internal bleeding was detected, and he had to be admitted immediately,” a source told PTI.

“He will remain under observation for anywhere between two to seven days depending on recovery, as one needed to stop the spread of infection due to bleeding,” the source added.

‘It Could Have Been Fatal’

BCCI’s medical team responded swiftly when Iyer’s vital signs began to fluctuate.

“The team doctor and physio didn’t take any chances and took him to the hospital immediately. Things are stable now, but it could have been fatal. He’s a tough lad and should be fine soon,” the source said.

Initial expectations suggested Iyer might need three weeks to recover, but with internal bleeding involved, the timeline could be longer.

Extended Recovery Likely

Doctors are likely to keep the 31-year-old batter under close observation for at least a week before clearing him to return to India.

“Since there has been internal bleeding, he will certainly need more time to recover, and at this point, it’s difficult to put a definite timeline on his return to competitive cricket,” the source stated.

Iyer had scored a composed half-century in the second ODI after a modest start to the series.

India Move On to T20I Series

While Iyer remains hospitalized in Sydney, the Indian team led by Suryakumar Yadav will begin a five-match T20I series against Australia starting Wednesday. Iyer is not part of the T20I squad, giving him time to focus entirely on his recovery.
