India Test captain Shubman Gill believes that fast bowlers naturally understand when their workload will be at its peak — and according to him, bowling at home is far less demanding compared to tours in England or Australia.
Amid ongoing discussions about Jasprit Bumrah’s workload management, Gill clarified that the team’s pacers know exactly when they need to push harder and when conditions allow them to ease off.
“Fast Bowlers Know Where They Are Needed More” — Gill
Bumrah featured in only three of the five Tests during India’s England tour earlier this year, receiving regular rest as part of the rotation strategy.
However, the star pacer played both Tests against West Indies at home and is expected to feature in both upcoming matches against South Africa starting Friday in Kolkata.
When asked about changing narratives around Bumrah’s workload, Gill explained:
“In places like England or Australia, the workload for fast bowlers is usually higher than in India. But our pacers have learned to recognise what kind of spells they need to bowl here.”
Gill on Bumrah’s Approach in Indian Conditions
Gill highlighted how bowlers adapt their intensity depending on match situations:
“If there’s reverse swing on offer, they’ll go full throttle for that phase. Bumrah also understands that the workload in Indian conditions isn’t as demanding, and he manages it accordingly.”
