Cricket entered a new era in Cape Town when Joshua van Heerden became the first player to step in as a like-for-like injury substitute. He replaced Edward Moore for Western Province after Moore tore his adductor muscle while fielding on Day 2 of a four-day match against the Lions.
This change, part of an ICC-backed trial, is underway in South Africa’s first-class competition, Australia’s Sheffield Shield, and India’s Duleep Trophy and Ranji Trophy. The idea is simple — give teams a fair chance if a key player suffers a serious injury during a match.
How the New Substitution Rule Works
If a player suffers an internal injury like a muscle tear, they must undergo an MRI or ultrasound. CSA’s chief medical officer Dr. Hashendra Ramjee and cricket operations manager Obakeng Sepeng review the reports and decide if the player qualifies for a replacement. Once they approve, the match referee confirms the substitution.
For external injuries such as fractures or dislocations, the process is quicker. The match referee can approve a substitute immediately after consulting the medical team.
After a replacement, the injured player must stay out of action for at least seven days. This rule ensures teams use the substitution system only for genuine injuries.
Different Rules Across Countries
Each country is testing the system differently. India currently allows like-for-like substitutes only for external injuries. Australia permits replacements up to the end of Day 2 and requires a 12-day recovery period before the player returns.
Right now, the trial applies only to multi-day domestic matches. If successful, the rule could expand to international cricket soon.
A Glimpse Into Cricket’s Future
Joshua van Heerden’s appearance as a substitute marks more than a new statistic. It shows how cricket is adapting to modern needs. Teams no longer have to suffer because of unexpected injuries. The rule improves safety, keeps matches competitive, and ensures fair play.
This moment could shape the future of the sport — one where player welfare and team balance stay at the heart of the game.
